Osher LLI at FAU Announces Spring Course Schedule
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Florida Atlantic University in Jupiter has announced its course offerings for the spring semester, which begins Tuesday, March 14.
Taught by FAU professors and distinguished guest lecturers, course offerings include such varied subjects as foreign policy, political science, film, music, art history and literature. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute was established to provide adults of all ages the opportunity to enrich their lives through non-credit, university-level courses with no homework or tests.
Spring one-time lectures and courses take place in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute complex at FAU’s John D. MacArthur Campus, 5353 Parkside Dr., in Jupiter, and include:
- On Saturday, March 14 at 2 p.m., “Piano Music by American Masters: Bernstein, Gershwin and More!” performed by Yoko Sata Kothari, a classical pianist trained at the Kunitachi College of Music in Tokyo. This one-time performance features not only music from “West Side Story” on Broadway to American jazz, but also foreign compositions which were inspired by America.
- On Monday, March 16 at 12 p.m., “The Formation and Evolution of Galaxies” taught by Ata Sarajedini, Ph.D., dean of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science at FAU. This one-time lecture will review the current state of knowledge about how galaxies such as our Milky Way formed and are evolving.
- On Wednesday, March 18 at 7 p.m., “The Comedy of Myron Cohen,” presented by Ira Epstein, Ph.D., a professor who served as chairperson of the communication skills department at LaGuardia Community College. This one-time lecture will sample many examples of Myron Cohen comedy routines.
- On Thursday, March 19 at noon, “The Politics of Sports Business” presented by Evan Weiner, a journalist and author of books covering the topics of business and politics of sports. This one-time lecture will review issues in sports history that include black pride, solidarity with blue collar workers and human rights issues.
- On Monday, April 13 at noon,“Short Stories from Around the World,” presented by Jacqueline Fewkes, Ph.D., an associate professor of anthropology at the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College at FAU. This four-week course will discuss short stories from around the world, including selections from Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia and the United States.
- On Tuesday, March 17 at 9:30 a.m., “Nine Elections that Changed America-And One that Might,” presented by Ralph Nurnberger, Ph.D., a professor that taught at Georgetown University, and Justin Gray, J.D., the president and CEO of Gray Global Advisors, LLC, an advisory firm that specializes in government affairs and business consulting. This four-week course will focus on nine of the most significant previous elections and will conclude with an overview of the ongoing controversies concerning how the nation will select its leaders in 2020.
