FAU to Host Virtual Events in Honor of Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month

Florida Atlantic University will celebrate Hispanic/Latinx Heritage with a series of virtual events beginning Tuesday, Sept. 15 through Sunday, Oct. 15, at its Boca Raton, Jupiter and Broward campuses. The events are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.

The 2020 Hispanic Heritage Month theme is “Hispanics: Be Proud of Your Past, Embrace the Future.” The theme invites all to us to reflect andtake pride in the accomplishmentsof Hispanic/Latinxs who come before us and have created possibilities today for all of us to embrace our futures.

Bodega Central ‘Hispanic/Latino/a/x: What is in the Label?’

Honoring Hispanic Heritage Month: Resources for Teaching about the Holocaust
Wednesday, Sept. 16 from 4 to 7 p.m.
ܴǴdz: Drawing on resources from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, this workshop will highlight strategies relevant to Hispanic Heritage Month that can be used to teach about the Holocaust.

Unrooting Colorism in Hispanic/Latinx Community
Thursday, Sept. 17 from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m.

A guided panel discussion, with Latinx leaders and individuals who study Latinx communities, to explore the coloristic tendencies within Latin America and its origins and to acknowledge the discrimination toward Hispanics with darker skin.

HACU National Internship ֱ Information Session
Monday, Sept. 21 from 3 to 4 P.M.

Thisinformation session will discuss the HACU (Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities) National Internship ֱ. The HACU National Internship ֱ's (HNIP) mantra is "Opening Doors of Opportunity, Abriendo Puertas de Oportunidad." Federal agencies and corporations partner with HACUbecause year after year HNIP recruits some of the brightest and most talented ֱ from across the country.

Navegando Mi Carrera (Navigating My Career): Hispanic/Latinx Panel Featuring FAU Alumni
Wednesday, Sept. 23 from 4 to 5 p.m.

In partnership with the FAU Center for Inclusion, Diversity Education, and Advocacy, the FAU Career Center will host an employer panel. The panel will focus on helping ֱ who identify as Hispanic or Latinx to successfully navigate the recruitment process and to have a smooth transition from college to their first professional role.

FUTUROS Retreat
Friday, Sept. 25 from 1 to 6 p.m.

The FUTUROS Retreat is a one-day, cohort-based retreat for participants to connect with one another, develop personal and professional skills and begin transforming leadership potential into action. The focus this year is on encouraging participants to build comunidad (community) and enhance their educational experiences and to reflect on the complex notions of their Latinidad (Latina/o/x identity).

Latin Fest
Thursday, Oct. 15 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Latin Fest 2020 will be hosted virtually on Gather.town to highlight and embrace Latin culture. The event will consist of virtual excursions across many different locations around Latin countries, ranging from the Favelas of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil to the wonder of Machu Picchu in Peru. Following the excursions, there will be Latin dance lessons. To end the night, we will host a movie party highlighting a Latin film.
