FAU to Host Events in Honor of Black History Month

Florida Atlantic University will celebrate Black History Month with a series of events throughout the month of February at its Boca Raton, Jupiter and Davie campuses. The events are sponsored by FAU’s Division of Student Affairs.

The following events will be held on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road:

A Mural Salute to Historic African-Americans
Daily starting Thursday, Feb. 1 at 10 a.m.
Social Sciences Building (SO 44), Suite 206
Student Union, Bulletin Board Outside of Suite 206

Learn about historical African-American pioneers with a progressive display highlighting abolitionists, kings and queens and other prominent African-Americans who contributed to making America great.

Flavors of Diversity: Soul Food
Monday, Feb. 5 at 5 p.m.
Nations Multipurpose Room

Students will watch a live cooking demonstration and engage in a dialogue about the history of Soul food. Students will be able to engage in meaningful conversation on how food can serve as a preservation of culture that is passed from generation to generation.

Blazers & the Arts
Friday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m.
FAU Library

Blazers & the Arts is an annual event sponsored by the FAU Chapter of Progressive Black Men, Inc. It celebrates the many contributions of African Americans to the arts while highlighting the talents of current FAU ֱ.

Church with the Sigmas
Sunday, Feb. 11 at noon
Seekers Church, Renaissance Hotel, Boca Raton

Join the men of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. as we come together to worship and give praise to the Lord and the blessings we have received. All are welcomed to attend this non-denominational event.

African American History Celebration

This event celebrates Black History Month by highlighting the accomplishments of notable African Americans and featuring cultural food, music and art.

Join the men of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. as they discuss the dynamics of relationships of people of color as well as the obstacles and opportunities people of color face when dating.

Queerligious: The Intersection of Faith & Sexuality
Thursday, Feb. 15 at 4 p.m.

Join us as we explore the sometimes complicated intersection of faith and sexuality. Regardless of religious beliefs or sexual orientation, this will be a candid and spirited conversation.

Artist Lecture: Hamza Walker

Enjoy a lecture by Hamza Walker, a nationally recognized contemporary art curator and educator, and the director of Los Angeles' LAXART Galleries, a venue for emerging and under-recognized contemporary artists.

Join FAU’s Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs as we have a conversation with ֱ about finding their own spiritual path. This discussion will focus not only on how ֱ can maintain their practice of choice, but also on how to explore other religious and/or spiritual practices.

Enjoy coffee and pastries with William O’Brien, Ph.D., professor of environmental studies and Wairimu Ngaruiya Njambi, Ph.D., associate professor of women’s studies and sociology at FAU. This will be an open discussion about race, gender and environmental social issues.

Ain’t I a Woman?

Join us for a music theater performance celebrating the lives and times of four historically significant African American women: ex-slave and abolitionist Sojourner Truth, renowned novelist and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, folk artist Clementine Hunter and civil rights worker Fannie Lou Hamer.

Urban Male Initiative Retreat
Friday, Feb. 2 at 4 p.m.
Davie Campus

This year's theme is "Redefine, Refocus and Reaffirm." Students will have an opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue and connect with others while unpacking what it means to be a male of color in a college environment.

‘Black Panther’ Self-Defense
Monday, Feb. 5 at 5 p.m.
Student Union, Room 105

Campus Recreation will celebrate the release of the “Black Panther” movie with a self-defense class inspired by the character’s security team. Students participating in the class will learn basic to intermediate self-defense techniques and have the opportunity to win prizes.

What Does Freedom Mean to You?

Stop by the Davie Student Union to learn how different cultures attained freedom and participate in video interviews and a photo collection of what freedom means to you.

The Intersection of POC & Queer
Thursday, Feb. 8 at noon
Student Union Oasis Lounge

Join us for a discussion on what it means to be a person of color (POC) and identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. This is also an opportunity for LGBTQ+ ֱ and allies to meet one another, discuss campus resources and develop support networks.

City Year of Miami Film Screening: ‘All the Difference’
Thursday, Feb. 15 at 4 p.m.

The Student Union Engagement Series celebrates Black History Month in partnership with City Year of Miami with a film screening of “All the Difference.” This film documents two young black men as they navigate their lives in broken homes and low-income, high-risk communities in Chicago. Following the film, join in a brief dialogue on how at-risk populations are navigating changes in today’s society.
