Events in Honor of 2018 Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month

Florida Atlantic University will celebrate Hispanic/Latinx Heritage with a series of events for 啵啵直播秀 and staff beginning Friday, Sept. 14 through Monday, Oct. 15, at its Boca Raton, Jupiter and Broward campuses. The events are free and open to the public.

The theme is 鈥淗ispanics: One Endless Voice to Enhance our Traditions.鈥 The theme invites all to reflect on Hispanic/Latinx American traditions, history and culture.听听

The following events will take place at FAU鈥檚 Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road:

Bodega Central 鈥楶relude鈥

Friday, Sept. 14 from noon to 1 p.m.

Heritage Park Towers Multipurpose Room

This event is a discussion platform uniting the voices and experiences of our Hispanic/Latinx faculty, staff and 啵啵直播秀.听听Event topics include issues that affect the Hispanic/Latinx community, such as identity formation, immigration, cultural complexities, financial literacy, and social justice.听

Hispanic Heritage Shabbat 鈥楶relude鈥

Friday, Sept. 14 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Hillel

The Hispanic Heritage Shabbat 鈥淧relude鈥 is a delicious Latin-themed Shabbat dinner exploring Jewish and Latin connections.

Global 鈥楥afe con Pan鈥 on the Go听听听听听听听听听

Monday, Sept. 17 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.听听听听听听听听听

Breezeway听

This tabling event will provide information about Hispanic Heritage Month, history, traditions, and where to celebrate in the area.听

Immigration and the First Amendment: The United States and the Hispanic/Latinx Experience with Maria Hinojosa

Monday, Sept. 17 at 2:30 p.m.

Live Oak Pavilion

The keynote will feature journalist Maria Hinojosa, followed by a panel discussion. Hinojosa is president and CEO of the Futuro Media Group and anchor/executive producer of 鈥淟atino USA鈥 on NPR and 鈥淎merica By the Numbers with Maria Hinojosa鈥 on PBS.

Un-naturally Scripted Others in Caribbean Literature

Thursday, Sept. 20 at 2 p.m.

Arts and Humanities Building, Room 105

An information session presented by the Center for Body, Mind, and Culture that features Mary Ann Gosser, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Languages, Linguistics and Comparative Literature within the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters.

Hispanic Health Fair
Wednesday, Oct. 3 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Diversity Way


Come to Owls Care Health Promotion's Hispanic Health Fair and learn strategies for maintaining health, especially as it relates to diabetes, HIV and HPV, mental health stigma, and alcohol consumption.听

Bodega Central

Wednesday, Oct. 3 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Mortal Doubt: Gang and Order in Guatemala City

Thursday, Oct. 4 from 1 to 2 p.m.

A discussion titled 鈥淢ortal Doubt: Gangs and Order in Guatemala City鈥 will be given by Anthony W. Fontes, Ph.D., assistant professor in the School of International Service at American University. The event is hosted by the Peace, Justice and Human Rights Initiative.听

Latin Fest

Thursday, Oct. 4 at 5 p.m.

Live Oak Pavilion

This will be an evening of celebration as FAU ends Hispanic Heritage Month with free food, music and giveaways.听

Brazilian Film Series

Thursday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.

Living Room Theaters

The Brazilian Film Series will be a screening of 鈥淒ona Flor and Her Two Husbands (Dona Flor e Seus Dois Maridos),鈥 which will be shown in Portuguese with English subtitles.

Free Food Friday:听Delicias Latinas
Friday, Oct. 5 from noon to 2 p.m.
S.E. Wimberly Library听


This free food event is for FAU 啵啵直播秀, and is inspired by the cuisine of Latin America.听

Hispanic Women at Work听

Monday, Oct. 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Diversity Way

This event will be looking at the barriers specific to Hispanic/Latina women at work and strategies that they can utilize to help meet their gender equity needs.听

Annual 鈥淐elebrating Hispanic/Latinx Heritage鈥 Address听

Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 4 p.m.

Student Union

The 2018 Annual 鈥淐elebrating Hispanic/Latinx Heritage鈥 address features life and business strategist, journalist and international speaker Ismael Cala.听The New York Timeshas identified this author of bestsellers and social communicator as "the Latin Larry King.鈥澨齃earn about Cala鈥檚 personal journey to success and how the power of mindfulness freed him of a painful history in order to reach his full potential.听

The following event will take place at FAU鈥檚 Fort Lauderdale campus, 111 East Las Olas Blvd.:

Wednesday, Sept. 19 from 4 to 5 p.m.

Salsa Under the Stars
Thursday, Sept. 20 from 6 to 9 p.m.
The Burrow

Come out to the Burrow to learn about Hispanic/Latinx cultures with one of FAU鈥檚 Wilkes Honors College faculty.听听A professional instructor also will be on-hand to teach salsa dance. Refreshments will be provided.听

Spanish Game Night
Monday, Oct. 8 from 6 to 8 p.m.
The Burrow


Come out to the Burrow to play some classic Spanish games and learn about their history. Refreshments will be provided. The event is co-sponsored by the Spanish Club and Campus Life, Northern Campuses.听

Circles of My Multicultural Self
Saturday, Sept. 22 at 11 a.m.
Education and Science Building


Students will participate in various breakout sessions including the 鈥淐ircles of My Multicultural Self鈥 activity. This activity will allow participants to identify the elements of their identities that are most important to them and share with the group. This will be followed with a potluck celebrating Hispanic/Latinx Heritage featuring dishes from Latinx Upward Bound participants鈥 cultures. The space also will include displays highlighting Latinx Upward Bound participants.

Bodega Central: Diversity in Latin America

Monday, Sept. 24 from noon to 3 p.m.

Student Union, Room 105

A discussion platform uniting the voices and experiences of FAU鈥檚 Hispanic/Latinx faculty, staff, and 啵啵直播秀. Come and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and discuss what makes Latin America unique and diverse, followed by fun games and activities. Food will be provided.听
